The provision of medical attention can be life-changing for an orphan. Hope's Heart strives to help orphans overcome physical challenges through surgeries [cleft lip/palate, heart, hernia, eye, etc], clubbed feet casting, blood transfusions, physical therapy, hearing aids, and other procedures that will correct a physical challenge or improve their quality of life.  Medical grants may also provide urgently needed medications or medical equipment.

2010 Medical Projects

Two Cleft Palate Surgeries

December 2010-  3 year old Luke and 9 year old Lianne both were gifted with surgical repair of their cleft palates.  Like a cleft lip, cleft palates contribute to eating problems, ear infections/hearing loss, speech and dental complications.  This treatment will help alleviate some of the potential obstacles.

February 2011 UPDATE- Both Luke and Lianne have had their cleft palate surgery and are recovered.  Luke's surgery posed more pain for him than Lianne, but he is doing well after a few weeks of recovery.  Luke says he is now able to speak better.

Heart Surgery

November 2010-
Katie has already had multiple challenges for one so young... malnutrition, multiple joint contractures, clubbed feet and pneumonia.  She also faces heart surgery next month to correct multiple heart defects.  We have watched as healing has and is coming for the original challenges.  Now we are praying for a healing to her heart.

January 2011 UPDATE- We are grieved and sadly must tell you that Katie passed away after complications from heart surgery in mid-January.  This sweet baby who captured our hearts and for whom we fought for a better life is now with Jesus.

Orthopedic Evaluations

October 2010-
Chelsie and Freddie will be evaluated to determine if there is any treatment or surgery that will help with their orthopedic challenges.  Chelsie's issues are related to a prior spine surgery.  Freddie's are leg and foot related.

November UPDATE-  Freddie is now in a cast after two procedures on his waist and thigh.  Following the casting he will receive physical therapy.

Cleft Lip Surgery

October 2010-
Sweet Hayden is scheduled to have her cleft surgery this month.  The results are always so remarkable when a child is given the chance for improved health through this surgery; and we believe they will be for Hayden as well.

October UPDATE- Hayden has had successful surgery and was just discharged from the hospital.  She will continue to heal at her orphanage.

Hospitalization

September 2010-
Rong was taken to the hospital for testing and treatment for continuous pain and a distended tummy. The results showed he has a chronic condition that would require continuous treatment and has a poor prognosis.  I tube was placed in his intestines to help relieve the pain and air buildup, and Rong was released after two weeks back to the orphanage.  We pray for his healing.

Nebulizer

September 2010-

Eoin will be moving into foster care and is in need of a nebulizer to help treat asthma.  His foster parents will have this machine available for him as needed.

Heart Surgery

August 2010-
Evangeline has received life saving heart surgery and has just been released from the hospital.  Some funds have been released to help with a portion of the surgery costs.  Evangeline is receiving the very best of follow up care as she recovers.

October UPDATE- Evangeline is recovering well since having surgery.  She has a healthy appetite and a sunny personality.

Hospital Care

August 2010-
Ruth was hospitalized with failure to thrive issues and is being treated and closely monitored.  She has a severe lung infection.  We pray she will respond to treatment and begin to gain strength.

September UPDATE- Ruth was struggling with numerous critical issues aside from a lung infection.  She was not responding to treatment.  After spending over a month in the hospital, Ruth died peacefully.

Hospitalization for Pneumonia

August 2010-  Cleft babies have an increased tendency to contract pneumonia.  Joseph had been hospitalized for pneumonia treatment and spent a week in ICU.  He has since been released and is being closely monitored as he continues to grow and prepare for cleft surgery in the next couple months.

Hospitalization

July 2010-
Cody was hospitalized at just 6 weeks of age with multiple issues including  malnutrition, pneumonia and anemia.  This care saved his life, and he has now been discharged.  He will continue being monitored under the watchful eye of his nannies.  We trust he will begin gaining weight and getting stronger each day.

August UPDATE- After twelve days in the hospital, Cody has been released.  He is recovering under the watchful care of his nannies.

December UPDATE-
Just look at the miraculous change in this sweet little boy.  Not only did he recover from multiple issues as a newborn, but he has had his cleft lip surgery and is doing beautifully.  Cody is now be placed with a foster family.

Casting for Joint Contractures

July 2010-
Baby Katie was born with a rare congenital disorder that is characterized by joint contractures in her feet and hands.  The best chance at non-surgical repair is done through a series of castings over a period of many months.  We are grateful to fund Katie's treatments at a wonderful unit that will give her the daily dedicated care that she needs to one day give her the ability to walk and function normally.

August Update
-  In just a short two months, Katie has made remarkable strides in weight gain and in the casting of her feet.  We are so pleased to see the progress she has made.

September UPDATE- Katie has already completed the casting process and is now in braces.  What remarkable progress!

September UPDATE-  Katie has developed pneumonia and is in the hospital for treatment. We pray a quick healing for her.

October UPDATE-  Katie has recovered from pneumonia and has been released from the hopsital.  During the hospital stay, the doctors discovered Katie has multiple heart defects.  Heart sugery will be upcoming.

January 2011 UPDATE-  Katie died peacefully from complications following her heart surgery.

Pre and Post Op Special Care

July 2010- Special care is being given to Lan over the next few months in preparation for surgery.  This care will also continue following her surgery.  Attention to her unique needs will assist in strengthening her body for weight game and a healthy preparation for surgery, as well as individual attention following the procedure.

September UPDATE-  Lan is still underweight, but has gained weight and is alert and strong.  She is eating well.  She rolls over and touches toys when you give them to her.  Lan is a very quiet little girl, easy to care for.

Two More Cleft Surgeries

July 2010- After meeting these two sweet babies who captured our hearts during our recent orphanage mission trip, we just couldn't resist funding their upcoming cleft surgeries.  Jesse and Julianne will be scheduled for their cleft lip repair once they are strong and healthy enough to undergo the procedure.

August UPDATE-  Julianne has had her cleft lip surgery.  She is beginning the recovery process.  Jesse is scheduled for surgery in October.

October UPDATE-  Jesse  had successful surgery.

April UPDATE- Thankfully, Diana has been released from the hospital after spending a few weeks.  She was a very sick baby, and we are grateful for your prayers and financial support on her behalf.

Three Cleft Surgeries

January 2010- We begin the year with three new cleft lip surgery sponsorships.   Anton, Ellie and  Harrison will be receiving surgery over the next couple months...as soon as they are healthy and strong enough.  This life changing surgery will result in improvement in their eating as well as helping prevent future digestive and hearing challenges.
